more is more: mastering maximalism

We often hear people say “less is more” but here at Emily June Designs, we believe that “more is more”! Maximalist design can be high quality, highly detailed, and extremely personalized. When trying to achieve a maximalist design, there are so many different options on how to create the space of your dreams!

Here are a list of some of the things we incorporate into our designs when we’re going for the maximalist look:

  • lots of color

  • layering textures

  • fun wallpaper

  • antiques

  • artwork

  • mix of design styles

  • accessories

  • layered lighting

  • rugs

WILD & WHIMSICAL

Wild and Whimsical: Go Bold with the Wallpaper!

Our team at Emily June Designs believes that fun wallpaper is the key to a truly maximalist design! There are plenty of wallpapers out there, but choosing a statement wallpaper will elevate your space to the next level. In this design by Emily June Designs, we used a bold floral wallpaper from The Pattern Collective to be the focal point of this unique powder bathroom. But going bold with the wallpaper doesn’t necessarily mean you need to stop there. Hanging art on the walls and accessorizing is still an option that we love to do!

ARTFUL & ALLURING

Artful and Alluring: Create the Perfect Gallery Wall!

This gallery wall deigned by Suzanne Donaldson is a maximalist’s dream! Adding a wall full of artwork to your space is a great step to creating a maximalist design. In order to add more interest to your gallery wall, incorporate various art styles, assorted color frames, and different sized pieces of art. Using different elements in a gallery wall takes your maximalist design to the next level!

ECLECTIC & ENCHANTING

Eclectic and Enchanting: Accessorize Like a Pro!

Possibly one of the most common ways to achieve a maximalist design is to have fun with your accessories! Antiques, books, plants, the options are endless. Let the accessories that you choose for your space reflect who you are by representing your hobbies, interests, and personal style. Don’t be afraid to mix metals, textures and colors because that is how you will achieve the maximalist look! In this design by Emily June Designs, we accessorized using a lot of books because our client loves to read and has a large collection!

VINTAGE & VIBRANT

Vintage and Vibrant: Throw Some Antique Pieces in There!

Curating the perfect antique pieces for your spaces is the perfect way to create a maximalist design. This design by Happy Menocal Studio is the perfect example of how mixing modern elements with antique elements can add character to a space! There are many options when finding antiques for your home, and it’s all about finding a good balance that works for you. Whether you want to add one antique piece to your space or fill up the whole room with one-of-a-kind pieces, it’s totally up to you!

BRIGHT & BRILLIANT

Bright and Brilliant: Give Us Lighting Options!

Layering lighting is a great way to increase the maximalist look in your space, but it also gives you options on what type of lighting you use in different situations. There are three main types of lighting: ambient lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting. Ambient lighting is general lighting that is usually used to illuminate the space as a whole, task lighting is targeted to specific areas such as lamps for reading or pendant lights in the kitchen for cooking, and accent lighting can be used to highlight things such as art and accessories. In many spaces, these three types of lighting can be used simultaneously to give depth and interest to a space! Another option is to layer one type of lighting, such as pendants, in one spot as seen in this design by Emily June Designs to create the perfect maximalist design.
