presenting: the june journal
Happy Friday! As we usher in a new month, we’re also introducing a rebrand of our weekly blog. Say hello to the June Journal!
We're so excited to invite you into our Houston studio each week via the June Journal, featuring projects, design inspiration, and curated favorites by Emily. Our goal is to provide a more personal insight into what we do here at Emily June Designs! In the upcoming editions, you can look forward to regular features like Design Dilemmas, where Emily will give advice on submitted questions from readers. We can’t wait to share all of the big ideas we have for the June Journal!
While we’re turning a new page in the Emily June Designs book, let’s reintroduce the firm’s founder and principal designer, Emily! Emily Spanos, leading the charge to “banish the beige,” is a fourth-generation Houstonian who hung her own shingle after a decade of experience in the interior design field. Emily stands out from other designers because of her ability to reimagine a space with the client’s lifestyle, interests, and travels in mind – rather than simply copying and pasting the same design for each client.
Emily’s style is bold and full of color, while remaining sophisticated and elevated. A key part of her design strategy is to begin with a rug or wallpaper, which often features bold colors or patterns. This key element is used to inspire the design for the room, with elements drawing inspiration from that foundational piece. Another method for balancing multiple patterns is to pair large scale pattern with a small scale pattern, ensuring that one doesn’t fight visually with the other. Emily also enjoys mixing old and new materials to create a uniquely layered feel to each space while always striving to meet the client’s vision. She often accomplishes this by reupholstering favorite pieces and incorporating treasured accessories, such as a favorite portrait passed down throughout generations, into her designs.
Emily draws inspiration from many sources but attributes her creativity to her grandparents, who were, as a pair, a carpenter and an artist. One of her favorite childhood toys was a custom dollhouse that her grandfather built, with each family member decorating a room for her in their style. Today, Emily does just the same for her clients!
