today's new trends

Clothing trends aren’t the only thing changing rapidly, interior design trends are too! It can be hard to keep up with trends that seem to change at least once every year, so we wanted to highlight some of our favorite interior design trends that we have been loving so far in 2021. Earlier this summer, the Emily June Designs team had the opportunity to go to High Point Market and see some of these trends in person! Check out the trends that we have been loving.

Rattan Furniture:

Rattan furniture (also known as wicker furniture) can be great both indoors and out! This type of furniture is made out of a material called “rattan” which is a very flexible material, meaning that furniture can be highly customizable. Yay! Wicker furniture is easy to clean, it’s durable, and it can be done in so many different colors! We fell in love with the Gretel Lounge Chair when we visited the Made Goods showroom at High Point Market. Who wouldn’t want a dramatic green rattan chair in their home??

Maximalist Design:

A trend we have been seeing lately is the use of maximalist design, and you KNOW we are here for it! Nothing says #banishthebeige like the perfect mix of color, pattern and texture! Designing a room in the maximalist style gives so many opportunities to incorporate many different design styles in one space. A little bit of traditional design can be mixed with modern design, while also incorporating art deco or bohemian elements; the possibilities are endless! We see why maximalist style has been a trend lately, it can make any space easily adaptable to the design preference of more than one person. Check out our bedroom design, it’s a maximalist’s dream!

Comfort:

2020 taught us a lot (and put us through a lot) but one thing that we learned is that we want a comfortable home that fits our specific lifestyle. Since we all spent so much time at home and even started working from home, comfort became a high importance for many of us! Sure, you may love the way a certain sofa looks, but is it comfortable? Is it good quality furniture that will withstand time and wear in your home? These are things to think about when choosing pieces for your home, and nothing says comfortable like this reupholstered sofa in our client’s home!

Durable Fabrics:

I’m sure we’ve all had that panicked moments after spilling something on our clothes, our furniture or even worse, on someone else’s furniture! Luxury performance fabrics make situations like this less stressful because they can be cleaned easliy. Perennials fabrics are a great choice when choosing fabrics because they are made of 100% solution-dyed acrylic, meaning that they can be cleaned even using bleach without affecting the integrity of the fabric. Sounds like the perfect choice in a house full of kids (or messy adults), right?? No wonder we have been seeing them in use so much lately!

Wallpaper:

Using wallpaper is a one-step way to dramatically transform any space! Here at Emily June Designs, we use wallpaper often because it is a bold way to incorporated color and pattern into a space. No matter what your design style is, there is a perfect wallpaper out there for you just waiting to elevate the look of your space. We are so happy that wallpaper is making such a large comeback, we don’t think it should be seen as an old, outdated trend! This Pattern Collective wallpaper that we used in our client’s home makes such a statement as soon as you walk through the door.

Though all of these trends are fun, we try to stay away from being TOO trendy in our designs. It is easy to go over the top with trends to where your space will feel outdated within a year. We obviously don’t want that to happen, so we like to incorporate only a few “trendy” elements into the design to avoid the space being oversaturated with trendy pieces. There are many timeless design elements that can be adapted with the times and the trends, and that is a great way to ensure that your space doesn’t turn into a 2021 time capsule! It’s all about balance and knowing how to blend different elements to create one cohesive space. We hope you love the 2021 interior design trends as much as we do!
