Color Psychology: Which Colors Will Make You Happy?
Colors have a strong effect on the kinds of emotions that we feel. Choosing colors to use in your home shouldn’t just be based on aesthetics, but based on psychology as well! Who wants to live in a space that evokes bad emotions and feelings? I know I don’t!
Warm colors have the ability to help you add a sense of cheerfulness to your home. Red is often seen as a power color and can promote feelings of passion and excitement. However, too much red can be overpowering and make one feel emotions of anger or anxiety. It’s all about balance! Orange is a color that can make you feel energized and give a sense of safety, who wouldn’t want to feel that way? Yellow, the sunshine color! Yellow provokes feelings of happiness, optimism, and productivity. Be careful though, because using too much of dark or dull yellow colors in your space can have the opposite effect on your emotions. We don’t want that!
Using cool colors gives you the ability to add a calming affect to your home. Green creates a soothing feeling because it is considered an earth tone, and it is a great color to create a calm space to relieve stress. Blue also promotes feelings of calmness, along with creativity. On the other hand, using too much blue can make a space feel cold and uninviting. Purple is usually referred to as a color of royalty, and promotes feelings of elegance and wisdom. Cool colors are great to use in bedrooms because that is the ultimate place of relaxation in your home!
I’m not a psychologist, but it is important to take this information into consideration when designing a space! Sure you want to choose colors for your home that you love, but you also want to make sure that you are using those colors in a strategic way. Everyone deserves to feel happy in their home!
Get Organized!
I’m sure we all know the feeling of having a disorganized home, it’s stressful and can lead to feelings of sadness and frustration. Having an organized home can benefit you in so many ways such as reducing stress levels, increasing productivity, and improving sleep. When designing your home, it is important to really evaluate how you use every single space that way you can create the smartest system of organization that works for you and your family. Who uses each room in the house? What is each room used for? Are the things that are used very often easily accessible? Are these things easy to put back where they belong to prevent future mess? Asking yourself these questions can save you and your family from having a disorganized living situation down the road.
Clean out the clutter! When is the last time you went through your things to minimize the unused items in your home? Do you really need that shirt that has been hanging in your closet unworn since 2012? Is it necessary to hold onto an old coloring book that your kids haven’t opened in a few years? Have you somehow accumulated 3 sets of measuring spoons when you really only need 1 set? Donating unused items makes organization easier, and organization helps to make your home more functional and comfortable.
Function is Key!
Nobody wants to live in a dysfunctional home, so let’s learn some ways to prevent that from happening! Besides organization, which is arguably the most important step in creating a functional space, there are many ways to make your home more functional. Not everyone lives the same lifestyle and has the same day-to-day habits, so it is important to evaluate your habits before you can determine what you want your space’s function to be! Lighting is a great way to increase the function of your home. Increasing the quality of lighting in your home can help out a lot. Poorly lit rooms are not living up to their full potential! Layering lighting with the use of task lighting, overhead lighting, and mood lighting is a great way to add flexibility to a space. Also, utilizing natural light to your preference and daily habits is something that anyone can do, and it’s so easy!
Maximizing your space to ensure you are using it to its full potential can quickly increase the function of your home. An easy way to do this to to play around with the layout of your furniture. Is everything easily accessible? Does your furniture serve the purpose of the room you are arranging it in? How many people will usually be in this space? Are you creating enough space for them to comfortably relax? Ask yourself these questions and go maximize you space! Change is good! Maybe your space isn’t as functional as it could be because it is lacking storage options. Add storage! There are so many different types of storage solutions, so it is easy to find a solution that works best for you and your family. Use a bookshelf when you need a good amount of storage but don’t have a lot of floor space, hang up some floating shelves wherever they are needed, swap out your old ottomans for ottomans that have storage in them. The opportunities are endless! We all spend so much time in our homes, so why wouldn’t we want them to be as functional as possible? It takes some time and effort, but functionality will create a happy home!
