how emily june designs does "beige"

Here at Emily June Designs we are all about color, but if you’re reading this you probably already know that about us! We might be all about “banish the beige” but we understand the importance of incorporating neutrals into our designs to create balance. Below, we talk about some of the neutral designs we have done and how we spiced it up in the Emily June Designs way!

design around the white

While this design has pops of color, the primary color used within this design is white. To add a little dimension to this design, we included some glass-front cabinetry for our client to have a space to display some of their dishes! We used black hardware on the cabinets that stand out against the white and create some contrast.

The white marble countertops and textured tile backsplash also help to create some dimension in this kitchen! While both of these elements are white, the different textures separate them from one another. Designing with white a lot of white elements can make a space seem cold, but if you add some dimension with textures and different materials it can really elevate your space!

include some pattern

Patterns come in all shapes, scales and textures, and here we see an example of two! First, there’s a very bold striped pattern on the upholstered chair. The second pattern is a little less obvious and some would even consider it texture! The side table next to the chair has interesting details that create a pattern in a unique way. When placed next to the chair, it really created some contrast not only in the color of the wood tones but the pattern as well!

This chair was an antique that our client had, and we had it reupholstered in this bold fabric. We love the look of mixing the old with the new, so we chose a more modern pattern to go on the antique chair and it turned out fabulous! If you have an empty corner in your primary bedroom that you want to make use of and add a little interest to your room, try something like this! It’s a fun and easy way to add your own personal touch and charm to your design while also creating another small seating area.

texture that speaks for itself

As we mentioned before, texture is a really important part of designing with neutral colors. This design features a backsplash that brings a lot of texture to the space while creating contrast from the white cabinetry, countertops, and tile flooring. The fact that each brick-like tile is a different color helps create even more dimension than a one-toned tile would! It pushes the cabinetry and range hood forward, creating more perceived layers to this kitchen design.

How fun is the pendant light over the island? Fixtures like this can add more than you think to any space! The texture and shape of this lighting feature is a focal point in this design against the white ceiling.

The kitchen island adds a pop of color to this kitchen design, and it really grounds this design and draws your eye to the center of the kitchen. This combined with the textured backsplash and lighting feature creates a dynamic design!

add pops of color

This design is a perfect example of how to add a little bit of color to your space without taking away from a neutral color palette. Pops of color can create focal points in any design, and the bright red pendant light over the desk is a perfect example of that! Adding small focal points in your design can really change your space without having to make drastic changes!

These pops of color do not have to be something as permanent or expensive as a light fixture; they can be something as simple as a throw pillow or blanket! Adding something small with some bright colors or funky patterns to your design can transform your space more than you might think. If your home feels like it may be lacking some color, there are so many fun and easy ways to incorporate more color!

use lighter hues

If bold and bright colors aren’t your style that’s perfectly fine! Blues and greens are calm colors that can be incorporated into any space. We wanted to maximize the natural light in this bathroom, so we kept the walls white in order to keep the space bright. The blue cabinets pair perfectly with the Vetrazzo countertops, and the blue and green roman shade adds a bit more pattern to the design!

make it bold

This design is definitely a little more bold than the previous ones and includes more color! This design is primarily neutral but the chairs, drapes and artwork add a lot of pops of blue to this sitting room. In neutral spaces, it’s fun to pick a few elements that you want to use to add color to your space! We included brass accents throughout this design as seen in the coffee table, coat rack, and small accessories. This along with the blue throughout the design allows this design to flow together effortlessly. Try something like this in your own home with your favorite color!

keep it simple

The overall design of this child’s bedroom uses soft hues and a lot of white to create a clean and calm space! Children’s bedrooms tend to use a lighter color palette like the pastel blue wall paint and subtle pops of yellow in this room.

The John Robshaw quilt has another quilt layered on top of it and adds cozy textures to the bed! The colorful quilt and yellow polka dot sheets add some color and pattern to this design, but the headboard is the true focal point of this design. Wood elements are a good way to add texture to any space, and it definitely works in this design!
