pretty in pink: inspo from barbie!
In celebration of today’s Barbie movie release, today’s June Journal entry is about all things pink! If you’ve seen the movie previews, you know one of the most anticipated parts of seeing the film is witnessing the infamous Barbie Dream House brought to life! Keep reading for our tips on how to tastefully usher in Barbie-inspired style to your spaces and everyday looks with chic and playful shades of pink!
if walls could speak
Wallpaper is an easy (and easily reversible!) way to add color to any room in a big way! Whether you choose to create a statement wall or paper a full room, you’re guaranteed to inject some Barbie-approved fun into a space! Using a sophisticated pattern on wallpaper, rather than full-color pink walls, lets spaces feel more chic than childlike. Choosing wallpaper for wall treatments also sets the stage for a subtle monochrome style that’s on-trend without feeling cloyingly overdone!
Finally, remember that wallpaper isn’t just for walls – closets, cabinets, shelving, and wall niches are the perfect (and unexpected) spaces to utilize a pretty pattern! Try mixing and matching different shades of pink for more contrast and visual interest! Just remember, a good rule of thumb is to vary the scale of patterns (ex: a larger gingham pattern paired with a tiny ditsy floral) so they don’t overwhelm each other.

all about the accessories
Barbie just wouldn’t be Barbie without all of her fabulous accessories! Instead of plastic sunglasses and beds, your Barbie-inspired space would feature more elevated items like framed vintage artwork or colored cocktail glasses. Remember, the goal here is to add pops of color that create a fun tone but don’t totally overwhelm a space. Pair pink accessories with contrasting colors like pastels, tropical palettes, or cool colors like greens and blues winning color combinations!
Throw pillows, accent rugs, and antique store finds are more examples of accessories that any real-life Barbie would use to create a sophisticated environment that still fits the theme!

pretty in pink
A good rule of thumb for larger pieces like bed frames, sofas, and chairs is to upholster them in softer neutral shades, creating a canvas for a room’s accessories, wall treatments, and window treatments. This approach allows your furniture to grow with you, as trends and preferences change. Barbie, on the other hand, has never done anything subtly! At Emily June Designs, we also aren’t one to shy away from bold color decisions, so if you’ve always wanted a pink bed frame, we say go for it!
Turn down the volume on loudly colored pieces by inverting the usual rule: add in neutral accessories, drapery, etc. to ensure that the space’s tone stays pleasant! Airy textures and smaller accessories allow the dominant piece to still shine, even while being softened up. Remember that the key to creating any beautiful space is balance – whether that’s in terms of visual texture, color, or scale!
