not your average seating

Seating arrangements are some of the most fundamental parts of any space within your home. From the entryway of your home to your private home office spaces, seating is essential! There are so many options when it comes to choosing what types of seating options are best suited to your needs. As designers, we must take into account how functional certain seating options are but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun with it! Keep reading to see some unique seating options in some very fun designs!

choose unique textures

Upholstery fabrics can sometimes make or break the functionality of your furniture. In this design, we decided to go with a more vintage look with a chair upholstered in a velvet fabric! The full design of this space utilizes various vintage aspects so this fabric was the perfect fit. This ottoman also allows the space to have various seating options, so a guest can choose where they wish to sit. Giving seating options is also a great rule of thumb to go by when designing a home!

There are various textures and types of fabrics that you can use to upholster your seating with. It can be helpful to take into account the function of your space before deciding on a final fabric. For example, if children or animals are going to be constantly present within your home, you might limit your options to performance fabrics that are easy to clean and can withstand wear and tear. If your seating is going to be outside, you might choose options that are weather-proof and sun resistant. No matter what your space is being used for, remember that you always have options!

make a statement

This gorgeous dining room has our eyes moving all over the space! The designer chose so many unique elements from the pendant lighting to the fun art on the walls! The white walls and floors create kind of a blank canvas for the accessories in the space to speak for themselves. The wood tones of the buffet and the dining chairs go well with each other, and the purple and orange hues used on the upholstery match the artwork on the wall. These elements tie this entire design together and allow this space to be visually pleasing! Combined with the large artwork and brass lighting fixtures, this design is something that can be admired forever!

Usually, the only type of seating seen in a dining room is the chairs around a table, but this design includes a hand-shaped chair to the left side of the room which is such a fun addition! This chair may or may not be the most comfortable to sit in, but it definitely makes a statement and adds one more unique element to the design!

use of color

No matter what your style is, choosing furniture that matches your aesthetic is always important! Seating is probably the most important category of furniture to focus on when designing any room, because the comfortability and functionality can have a huge impact on how you live in the space. Besides the functionality, the personality of the pieces in your home is just as important! Here at Emily June Designs, we love color, and colorful seating can completely transform a space. If you are decorating your own home and find a sofa that is bright and colorful and you cannot seem to pass it up, it’s actually a great place to start your design! A statement piece can be a great element to center your design around, and it gives a great starting point when deciding what direction to go with the overall design!

This design utilizes all sorts of colors from the orange sofa, to the green arm chair and the yellow pencil floor lamp. The yellow paint around the perimeter or the ceiling is a unique and artistic touch that gives this space a sense of creativity! The green armchair is a great example of how furniture can also serve as kind of a work of art because of its sculptural silhouette! Although the sofa provides plenty of comfortable seating, this chair gives another option within the room. Always choose the options that will best suit you and the flow of your space!

create focal points

Creating focal points within a space is a great way to add interest when you aren’t using large amounts of color and pattern! This design uses pink, blue, and neutral colors within the space that create a soft and light atmosphere. This designer could have chosen to have all the dining chairs upholstered in white, but they made a purposeful decision to have two of the chairs at the end of the table upholstered in a dark pink fabric. This was intentionally done to draw our eye to what’s right in front of us! If all the chairs were white our eye would be drawn to the back of this photo to the tiled wall, but with the inclusion of these pink chairs, it gives the foreground some extra attention. This designer proves that you don’t necessarily need a table full of matching dining chairs!

layer the patterns

When it comes to designing with pattern, our first tip is always to layer larger scale patterns with smaller scale patterns. This designer did that perfectly with these sofa and arm chair cushions! The main colors of blue and purple used on the furniture upholstery balance out perfectly with the yellow on the cushions and the neutrals within the entire design. The design features plenty of solid elements that allow these patterns to shine! This is a great example of how you do not always have to use pattern everywhere to make a statement!

If you want a little more pattern in your space, you can always start out small! First, try using throw pillows or cushions to create some variation within your space. Try out different patterns and colors until you find what you love! Also remember to choose patterns that won’t clash with each other, but have fun and choose things that speak to your personal style!
