stunning small spaces

Small spaces can be difficult to design, especially if you want to make the most of the room. In this week’s blog, we discuss how to overcome the design problem of small spaces and include some of our favorite ways other designers have successfully done so!

smart seating

One way to make a small space appear larger is to maximize the space with the furniture arrangement! It’s a unique touch to any room that can be inviting and cozy. In this small space, we filled it with a variety of different seating to give the illusion of a larger space. Just to be sure to pay special attention to proportionality so that the space does not feel overcrowded!

From pattern to furniture, we filed this space to the max! While this space is small, we included seating for four or five people. This creates a space that is welcoming and invites guests to take a seat and talk, or a cozy space for working from home!

painted perfection

Accessorizing your walls with paintings of all kinds can add a personal touch to any space and really make it stand out! Another thing this design features is open shelving, which is another way to make use of your wall space and create different layers within your design! Depending on the shelving you use, it can aid in having extra storage for books and small pieces of artwork.

Natural lighting and windows can open up any space and make it appear larger than it is. This designer made special use of this skylight in order to give the illusion of a larger space! Another thing that can really make the most of space is using dual function furniture. An example of this can be seen in this designer where the designer used storage cubes as an extra seating arrangement. This allows for extra storage while providing for more seating choices within this small room!

built-in beauty

Built-ins can be a game changer in any space! This specific built-in was done in a smaller apartment and while this room is extremely small, it still seems very open and deceivingly spacious. Using styling tricks like breaking up the use of books with vases and art pieces can also allow a bookcase to seem uncluttered. The use of the stairs gives the illusion of a larger space, while also providing a surface that acts as a desk. There are so many hidden layers to this seemingly simple design that really allow this space to appear open and spacious!

lavish lounging

One thing that can really elevate any design within a smaller space is furniture that fits just right within the parameters of the space! For example, this sofa goes wall to wall and fits perfectly within this small room. Additionally, the designer paid special attention to the amount of natural light coming into the space and did not choose a furniture piece that would have an arm that obstructed the window.

This designer allowed the space to speak for itself! The designer did not overfill this space but made it more simple and sophisticated to allow walking room while still providing a cozy place to rest. This small corner might just be the perfect place to sit down with a good book! The designer’s use of wall sconces instead of a ceiling-mounted light fixture allows for the space to feel bigger. However, the perfect amount of light will still be accessible within this cozy corner along with the natural lighting from the window!

strategic separation

Personalizing your space to your own taste is so important! This room gives off the atmosphere of intimacy and coziness with a touch of sophistication. While small, this space uses proportional furniture that fits perfectly within the space using color and pattern that make it stand out! Not only does the window have shades, but the bed itself has drapery that can separate it from the rest of the space and give the individual within the space even more privacy. The lighting also helps to separate this space and act as a lighting source on nights where the draperies are enclosing the sleeping space. The lamp, rug, and arm chair create another space separate from the sleeping area that is a great place to sit down, relax and read a book! This separation is further emphasized by the use of color, with one area primarily being yellow and the other a darker green. Despite the small space, the designer was able to create separation and a uniquely personalized space!
