style files with emily june: august

Today, we’re back with another Style Files journal entry! Style Files with Emily June is a new journal series we rolled out earlier this summer, where Emily shares what’s on her radar, from design trends to fashion and pretty things! We know that choosing an interior designer is like inviting someone to be part of your family for a few months – and what fun is that if you don’t know what makes them tick? Read on to learn more about what’s entertaining Emily this August!

“I love the color contrast in this pendant’s design – combined with the curvy scallop shape, it instantly delivers a dose of whimsy to any space! Bonus points for the option to customize its colors!

Lighting is one of those design areas where function is often favored over form. Going the unexpected route is always a fun way to delight clients!”

“One of my tried and true design tenants is to use “old and new” – contrasting something antique or vintage next alongside something more modern! I love the visual depth this brings to any design.

These wrapped bottles were a popular trend in midcentury France. I think they’d pair perfectly with a modern bookshelf painted in a glossy finish!”

“This bedroom design perfectly displays how to combine an array of patterns with balance! If done correctly, utilizing different patterns gives a space so much visual interest.

You can see how the vertical, horizontal, and even diagonal patterns move your eye around the room: from the bed’s posts to its canopy, then the headboard, then the wallpaper, and so on. It’s a beautifully engineered design!”

“This sculpture immediately imparts a sense of joy and playfulness! I love the bold colors and the texture of each individual form that makes up the whole sculpture.

Utilizing large-scale art pieces like sculptures is always a sure way to make a statement in a space. I encourage clients who are eyeing for sculptural pieces to look to local artists! Houston has a world-class art scene that is teeming with talent.”

“I love the layered look of this space: old and new pieces mingle with each other on different planes, while symmetry creates balance and order!

A gallery wall like the one you see here is an easy way to bring similar energy into your home. When planning out your wall, try to play with scale and shape – note how the big and small oval, square, rectangular, and even octagonal frames bring some excitement to this arrangement!”
