time warp: as if!

Today’s entry is another in our Time Warp series, where we blast to the past, back to the final decade of the 20th century! The nineties were full of change: that thing called the Internet (or more accurately, the World Wide Web) was finding its way into homes and offices, American voters were musically serenaded by then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton on a talk show, Disney was regularly releasing new animated films, and feeding pets included pushing a few buttons to take care of your Tamagotchi.

In terms of interior design, the Nineties left the outrageous trends of the previous decade behind, replacing them with cleaner looks, albeit no stranger to something called “Shabby Chic.” Keep reading to learn more about a few of the most popular trends from the time! As we wrap up, don’t miss our curated shopping list for a few subtle ways to relieve the 1990s!

texture tricks

Taking a moment to reminisce on the 1990s, you can probably think of one friend’s home that featured a faux finish. All the rage, these paint treatments featured sponging, stippling, and marbling to ensure that no wall was left too plain.

fine-tuned finishes

Copper, bronze, stainless, and matte black metal finishes found themselves popular in this decade, with “Honey Oak” (a syrupy warm yellow color) stained cabinets and Scandinavian-inspired blonde wood finishes right behind them.

zen gardens

In contrast to the busier trends of the 1990s, there was a movement towards minimalism: sleek finishes, clean lines, warm whites and beiges, all with lots of open space and natural light!

whimsical washes

The early Nineties brought varied color palettes with purple reigning supreme, followed by shades of burgundy, muted pink, orange, dusty blue, jewel tones, and grays. The neutral du jour was the one and only: beige!

retro remix

The 1990s curiously mixed grunge with the retro styling of the 1950s – let’s not forget that Weezer shot a music video set in a Happy Days episode. This “shabby chic” look featured vintage accessories styled with more modern pieces, creating the mix-and-match trend of the decade! Grandma’s chintz couch sandwiched between two minimalist metal and glass side tables? Perfect.
